Database Monitoring

Sybase ASE Monitoring

Summary:

Many companies around the world rely on Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) to store their most vital information assets. That's why ensuring optimal uptime of these databases is so vital.

With the NimBUS for Sybase ASE Monitoring Probe, database administrators gain an effective way to monitor and manage the performance of their Sybase ASE databases—so they can ensure these systems are always performing optimally.

Introduction

Organizations around the world rely on Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) to house, manage, and secure an array of critical corporate resources. In these enterprises, the corporate database is the engine that keeps business moving. Simply put, if the database goes down, business stops. With so much at stake, how can IT organizations proactively and efficiently manage their Sybase ASE databases to ensure optimal performance and uptime?

The Solution

Nimsoft offers enterprises an efficient, comprehensive way to monitor, manage, and optimize the performance of their Sybase ASE databases. With the NimBUS for Sybase ASE Monitoring Probe, database administrators can be alerted to performance issues and quickly resolve those issues—before they affect users and the business.

The NimBUS Sybase Monitoring probe provides comprehensive monitoring of Sybase environments, and it is fully integrated with Nimsoft’s service level management suite, enabling organizations to manage their entire infrastructure with a single solution.

Monitors

  • All activity within Sybase ASE environments, including multiple servers and instances, among both local and remote servers.
  • Comprehensive server performance metrics, including uptime, free log file space, data file size, log file cache hit ratio, and more.
  • Track all critical activity, including connections, heartbeats, intervals, SQL timeouts, and more.

Features

  • Centralized views of all vital Sybase performance data.
  • Granular capabilities for setting thresholds, polling schedules, and alarms.
  • Powerful tools for managing multiple monitoring profiles.
  • Intuitive installation and seamless integration.

Benefits

  • Improved performance and uptime. Proactive monitoring and alerting accelerates identification of performance issues—enabling response before end user productivity is affected.
  • Enhanced resource optimization. Centralized, cohesive view of performance delivers insights into opportunities for resource optimization.
  • SLA compliance. Instant alerts and real-time dashboards notify service managers in advance of SLA compliance breaches.

Sybase ASE Monitoring

Comprehensive Sybase visibility—With the NimBUS probe, organizations gain a comprehensive view of their entire Sybase infrastructure, whether it is comprised of a single database instance on a single server, or multiple instances on a number of server clusters. A single probe can monitor both local and remote database servers, so administrators can effectively monitor any or all of their organization’s Sybase servers, regardless of their location.

Because of the NimBUS probe’s centralized view of all Sybase instances, and its sophisticated graphical user interface, administrators can quickly get a complete picture of the real-time status of the entire Sybase infrastructure, and they can instantly drill down to get complete details on any specific Sybase server and database instance.

Intuitive, streamlined configuration—The NimBUS Sybase monitoring probe features an intuitive user interface that makes initial configuration fast and efficient. Using this interface, administrators can quickly define which database servers and which database instances are to be monitored, and how they’re to be monitored. The NimBUS Sybase probe provides the ability to manage monitoring at a variety of levels:

  • Checkpoints, which are mechanisms for gauging the health and performance of specific subsystems within the database instance. (See next page for a complete list of checkpoints available.)
  • Monitoring profiles, which are custom definitions of groups of checkpoints to be monitored and how they’re to be monitored.
  • Templates, which can be used to manage multiple profiles, so, for example, checkpoints can be defined globally, and every time a change is made to the template value, it will automatically be propagated across all profiles associated with the template.

Sophisticated control of monitoring variables—The NimBUS probe monitors all required performance metrics within the Sybase environment, and puts users in complete control over which resources are monitored, when they’re monitored, and how they’re monitored. The NimBUS solution offers these powerful management capabilities:

  • Granular threshold definition. For each checkpoint being monitored, users can either leverage predefined thresholds or set specific thresholds using a range of criteria.
  • Flexible polling scheduling. The NimBUS Sybase monitoring solution offers complete control over when and how frequently checkpoints are monitored—providing controls based on scheduling (e.g. Monday – Friday between 12:00 and 2:00 and 3:00 and 5:00), or by exception (e.g. every day except Sundays). For each polling period, a poll can be carried out once, or on a range of intervals.
  • Integrated, customizable hints. NimBUS probes come with predefined hints that are associated with each alert that may occur. These hints provide information about how to address the specific issue that’s arisen, speeding resolution. Plus, these hints can easily be tailored to an organization’s specific environment and resolution processes.

Delivering actionable information—The NimBUS solution offers not only comprehensive monitoring, but the powerful alerting and reporting capabilities that enable administrators to turn detailed data into actionable information. Administrators can leverage dashboards, alarms, business level reports, and more to ensure they get the level of detail they need, when they need it.

System requirements—The NimBUS probe can be integrated with any Sybase ASE database server that supports the OCS client interface.

Complete checkpoint monitoring—The NimBUS Sybase monitoring solution can track and report on the following checkpoints:

  • Active_users
  • Buf_cachehit_ratio
  • Check_dbalive
  • Check_msalive
  • Commited_transactions
  • Database_count
  • Database_size
  • Database_size_mb
